The Other Faces Of Egypt

Little has changed

since Mark Twain visited the Giza plateau in 1869. In his diary The Innocents Abroad, Twain wrote: "The Sphynx is grand in its loneliness; it is imposing in its magnitude; it is impressive in the mystery that hangs over its story. And there is that in the overshadowing majesty of this eternal figure of stone...which reveals to one something of what he shall feel when he shall at last stand in the awful presence of God."

No matter how many times you go to Egypt, the pyramids and sphinx are a magnet, drawing you back once more to gaze in awe and disbelief. Whether it's the first visit or a return, Egypt is one of those magical places that once experienced, makes every visitor yearn for more. With limited time and resources, newcomers must opt for one of the many tours that incorporate Egypt's most famous sights, because from Cairo to Aswan there are antiquities and monuments galore. But Egypt has many other faces: natural beauty, a diverse culture and a more recent history that only enhances the grandeur of the ancients. Tourism officials and operators alike realize the need to develop other options in a bid to keep people coming back for more. Cairo is a world unto its own, the Red Sea offers unique aquatic pursuits--and Victorian Egypt can captivate architecturebuffs.
